Cable braiding and screening

Cable braiding and screening is designed to reduce electromagnetic influence from internal and external sources, improving the overall operational effectiveness of a cable.

We offer comprehensive cable braiding and screening solutions, ranging from fine single strand braids to heavy duty multiple strand braiding. We can also provide foil shielding with drain strands and lapped screening where flexibility is more of a concern.

The materials we use include copper and tin braids, silver and textile braids, and heavy duty Kevlar braids. Other materials include galvanised steel and Nomex.

Our approach to cable braiding and screening

We provide full consultation on screening and braiding services, determining the right level of screening for the environment in which your cable will be located.

Our screening options are versatile too; we can build a cable from the ground up and screen it for you, or add screening and braiding to an existing cable.

We have the capability to screen cables up to 35mm in diameter on either of our 16/24/32/48 bobbin braiders.

Do I need cable screening?

In the modern world, electromagnetic interference (EMI) and electromagnetic pulses (EMP) affect everyone and everything, from laptops to smart phones.

This has led to the introduction of specific legislation (EMC, or Electromagnetic Compatibility legislation) on EMI and EMP levels, designed to limit the amount of interference produced through good product design.

Essentially, all products that could potentially emit or be affected by EMI or EMP need to be specifically designed to limit their output or risk. This is where CDC comes in; we can ensure your cable is fully compliant with the rules based on in-depth research into your business environment.

Cable screening in depth

Electromagnetic interference has a big impact on the performance of a cable. Cable screening and braiding provides the solution, adding a collective cable shield over a group of wires or twisted pairs.

A cable can be shielded in a number of ways; the solution chosen is determined by the cable’s operating environment and the importance of the data or signals being transmitted through the cable.

There are a broad range of cable screening solutions, from simple aluminium foil tapes including drain wires to multiple braids combined with alternative ferromagnetic wraps. Below is a short breakdown of the types of cable screening we carry out at CDC:

Aluminium or copper foil tape
This is the cheapest form of electromagnetic screening, and is ideal for low EMI applications. There is no extra manufacturing process associated with this solution.
Helically lapped copper screening
This is the ideal solution for individual wire or twisted pair screening, and can also be applied to cables where flexibility is a crucial element.
Traditional (woven) cable braid screen
Traditional cable braid screens can be manufactured using a range of materials, including copper, silver, textile or Kevlar. This style of screening can offer a wide range of % coverage. At CDC, we suggest using multiple fine wires in order to preserve flexibility while providing optimum coverage.
Multiple braid layers and metalised foil
This solution utilises multiple braid layers, with metalised foil placed between each layer. It is generally used for applications with a severe EMI risk, with the amount of layers dictated by the level of risk.

Our high level of technical expertise and experience means that we can determine the best cable shielding solution for you.
