Learn About Cable Construction

Existing cables and wires can be laid up and used to form a single cable, this can include cables of different sizes or a combination of data, control and power cables all intended for a unique application and as a by product ease of installation. In principal the above elements are fairly straightforward to specify, so that the cable is able to perform its electrical tasks.

Equally where the cable has to operate will greatly influence if the cable is Screened, Armoured and the insulation and jacket material thought suitable for its environment and electrical characteristics. Whilst all these elements are vital to the end design it is the cables and wires required in the core of the cable that allow the cable to carry out its function.

Options

The basic design of the laid up cores has one primary requirement and that is that the cable is as circular as is possible to facilitate the efficient addition of the other operations that follow the laying up of the cores into a bunch. However the designer has to accommodate many other interactions between the components chosen eg Electrical and physical interference, size, flexibility and or flexing (often confused as one and the same thing) also the strength of the cable unit and its parts have to be taken into consideration.

Guidelines/Rules

Once all these factors are known a combination of geometry and tried and tested cable rules, lay lengths, bend radii etc. are applied to arrive at a layer or bundle configuration suitable for its application.

CDC Ltd working with its Customer’s, has built up a wide knowledge of the principals required for the design and manufacture of laid up cables to suit their customers individual requirements. This has been achieved through good basic design and manufacturing processes supported by the installation of machinery capable of efficiently enabling us to undertake the operations required. And by employing experienced engineers and operators together with extensive life testing and trials to ensure the end cable performs its task.
